Weight Loss Truths: Don’t Dare Compare

Today I was over at @JackSht’s blog, seeing what shenanigans he’s been up to recently. If you don’t know Jack (sorry it was just too tempting) you can read his guest post 25 Ways to Improve Your Crappy Life here at Freaking Fitness and you’ll know why I would actually dare to use the word shenanigans.

What I read today on his blog was something that so deeply spoke to my heart about the struggles of weight loss. I read through his journal entries and felt his struggle.

It’s so true about walking in another person’s shoes. You just don’t know. You can’t know. You only know what your journey is like.

It made me think of all the advice we read everyday about weight loss. Even if we all read that advice at the same moment, we all filter it differently. Each day is you, me, waking up with an individual set of life circumstances – baggage we lug around and the voice in our head speaking to us. Sometimes it’s a “I’m gonna kick butt” day.

Sometimes it’s not.

Jack’s post reminds me that everyday is somewhat unpredictable, but that also means it’s full of opportunity. Opportunity to forget any of yesterday’s failures but still “ride that lightning bolt” of the day’s successes.

Waking up knowing that we can’t control every aspect of our lives is a little unnerving to me. But really it’s like a rainy day. You can wish that everyday be full of sunshine, but you’d never see a rainbow.

Each day we need to embrace our own successes, no matter how small, and use them for fuel for our own unique journeys.

  1. Beautiful… unpredictable, yet hopeful….

I love that :  You can wish that everyday be full of sunshine, but you’d never see a rainbow.

It is symbolic of why I enjoy your work so much – you inspire with your authentic self and relate to your audience.

Keep up the good work!  ;D

  3. “Sometimes it’s a “I’m gonna kick butt” day.
    Sometimes it’s not.”
Yes, that. Exactly. And accepting both kinds is not only just fine, but, necessary. Life just wouldn’t work with kick butt days every day. And I forget that – I think I’m failing on the non-kick-butt days. Wrong!
I love this post! It totally speaks to me in regards to all the parts of my life. Where I am struggling most, though, is in weight loss and working at home. And so it helps me just keep on trudging forward, because, yesterday’s ‘mistakes’ don’t have to guide the whole outcome!!!

Hi Lisa 🙂 Thanks for commenting! So right — yesterdays mistakes can be a teaching tool but don’t define us. We aren’t our mistakes.

  4. It’s funny how easy it is to get caught up in our own perspectives and fail to realize the obvious: we’re all different!  I’m great at appeciating that in theory, kinda sucky at applying that knowledge in real life. Thanks for the reminder!

  5. Thanks for finding ME (twitter) so that I’ve found you. I like your blogs and attitude. I will be a regular reader from now on. I Tweeted this blog today. It’s good advice that we all need to hear often. Thanks!

Thanks so much Chris. Glad you’re here! Twitter is my favorite place to connect and love you call yourself  a student of healthy living. Me too! 🙂

  6. It is true that we all see things differently and experience the world in our own unique way.

For me, the most important part of realizing this is that it isn’t what happens in a day that matters, but how you react to it.  Even a day filled with rainbows could be terrible if it reminds you of the time you failed to find the pot of gold at the end of it after searching for hours.  Or, as the singer-visionary Luke Bryan teaches us, rain can be a good thing too!

  7. I really enjoyed the article here. The things you have discussed about
weight loss are important to know. Thanks for mind blowing writing!!
